Hand feel
The fabric feels light and airy in-hand with a soft textured weave and visibleleno-like openness; at 120 GSM it reads as a medium-light, breathable cotton suited to warm climates. Surface character is slightly slubby with a matte, tactile finish and little embroidered Jamdani motifs that give subtle raised texture (see attached images). Suggested uses
✦ Ideal for 1) Airy button-up blouse or camp shirt — a sheer, textured summer top that layers beautifully. 2) Lightweight layering kimono / duster — worn open over camisoles or tees for effortless drape. 3) Long linen-style scarf and headwrap — the motifs give character at the ends and it wears like a soft voile. 4) Beach cover-up / sarong — breezy and quick-dry for seaside use. 5) Sheer café or tiered curtains — lets light through while showing the handwoven motifs. These uses suit this fabric because the 120 GSM khaddar weight, open weave and soft drape highlight breathability and hand-crafted motifs without needing heavy structure. ✦ Also suitable for Shirt-dresses or tunics (recommend a lightweight cotton slip or underlining); sleeveless summer dresses (use full lining or bias facings); lightweight full-length skirts with a cotton lining; decorative cushions or pillow covers with a plain cotton backing; simple table runners or wall hangings when backed or interfaced. ✦ Not recommended for Tailored trousers, structured jackets or blazers; heavy-use upholstery or seat covers; fitted garments requiring firmness or minimal stretch (e.g. pencil skirts without lining); baby bedding or items that need frequent hot washing without pre-treatment.
Care instructions
Wash cold on a gentle cycle or by hand; wash separately for first few washes to avoid dye transfer. Do not bleach; dry flat or hang to dry out of direct sunlight to protect natural colours. Iron on medium heat with steam or use a press cloth (cotton setting ~150°C). Store folded in a cool, dry place away from prolonged light.
Washing and shrinkage
Hand wash or gentle machine wash in cold water (max 30°C) with mild soap; expect approximately 3–5% shrinkage on the first wash — pre-washing before cutting is recommended.
Craft story
Woven in a small cluster of Ponduru khadi workshops, this Jamdani cloth brings together two living craft traditions: the plainwoven Ponduru khaddar foundation and tiny hand-loomed Jamdani motifs embroidered into the shed. Local weavers and motif-specialist artisans work from natural indigo and vegetable reds, placing each small white-and-indigo triangle by hand so every repeat reads like a tiny, quiet emblem. The result is a breathable, artisanal cloth with visible hand-markers — slubs, tiny irregularities and a slow-dyed depth — that celebrates material honesty rather than machine perfection.
Colour notes
The natural-dyed red reads as a warm, muted brick/terracotta tone with gentle tonal variation across the cloth — darker in folded or double layers and slightly brighter in strong daylight. The indigo and natural-white Jamdani motifs sit in crisp contrast and may show slight haloing or unevenness typical of hand-dyeing.
Additional notes
Please note: natural dye colours and motif placement will vary slightly from bolt to bolt and between hand-woven pieces — this is part of the handmade character. We recommend pre-washing a sample to check for any initial dye run and shrinkage before cutting.
